Devon and Cornwall Housing Association has developed a unique approach to being environmentally friendly and engaging customers.
Deveon and Cornwall Housing Association has unique estate is in the heart of South Molton, North Devon with properties built to high environmental standards.
The concept behind the design was - 'To be a future template for social housing and act as a catalyst for change for future projects.Q
The homes have a range of environmental features like solar water heating, south facing conservatories and cool larders. This ‘mix and match’ approach has enabled us to work closely with the residents to monitor the homes and find out which features have proved most popular and provided environmental and financial benefits.
Social housing is scarce and those on the housing waiting list had specific needs. By involving them they designed three properties specifically equipped to meet the physical needs of prospective tenants. DCHA met residents six months before the contractors started to discuss design and concept. These informal sessions also enabled individuals to meet their prospective neighbours, make friends and to learn more about the homes and how to live a sustainable life.
Now, DCHA successfully applied to Defra’s environmental action fund to develop the Sustainable Living Project and are part way through a three year project with an aim to learn from Oak Meadow and transform the way they manage their homes and work with residents to promote the green message.
