Chinese elders cherish their culture

Cherish House offers homes with care and support for Chinese elders in Birmingham.

Cherish House is a housing with care and support scheme for Chinese elders in Birmingham.  It is supported by a team of Chinese employees dedicated to enabling greater independence for residents, particularly those who are made vulnerable by illness, disability and increasing frailty.

Trident is conscious of the need to improve access to services by older people from minority ethnic groups through consultation, improved information and culturally sensitive services.

Many Cherish House residents have experienced the same problems as their peers but more intensely, and some have faced additional barriers resulting in double discrimination and exclusion.  Key to Trident’s success is to reflect the diversity of residents in the appropriate cultural mix of staff.

Cherish House enables South Asian elders to be together.  This helps produce a culturally responsive, tailored support service that reduces isolation.  Chinese people feel a strong need to be housed in a specialist scheme that meets their pronounced cultural and language needs.

From this flagship scheme, Cherish House provides a range of floating support services to over 130 older people (including non-Chinese older people).
