The Forest Community Centre in Bordon was buzzing with talent and excitement a few weeks ago, with the county’s first multicultural arts project.
Vortex Dance Theatre Company and East Hampshire District Council, supported by Hampshire County Council and Drum Housing, produced an exciting array of activities for people across the district.
Free workshops in Irish, Hip Hop, Contemporary Brazilian and African Dance gave children and adults an unprecedented insight into these diverse forms.
African drumming with Djely Kouyate, got the children’s rhythmic energies flowing, with some forming an excellent band “The Djely Babies”, who were good enough to play with the professionals.
Bengali storytelling and extremely popular Henna tattoos were just a few of the other activities that people enjoyed.
The event closed with a stunning performance by the workshop leaders:
“The evening performance was spectacular and there was stuff there I have never seen before” said Catherine, aged 12.
The children and young people who took part built rapport with the workshop leaders, who gave them a better understanding of multicultural differences. More workshops of this kind are planned for 2008, with the culmination of a Multicultural Day, due to take place towards the end of the summer in Liphook.
