Somerset residents proved they could give Alan Titchmarsh a run for his money after entering some outstanding outdoor spaces in our annual Gardening Competition, which this year celebrates its 10th anniversary.
Mendip Housing’s Annual Gardening Competition is open to all our residents and is part of our work to make local communities better places to live. It has also proved an excellent way to involve new tenants in our work, giving us a springboard to introduce them to other forms of tenant participation.
Every resident is encouraged to enter and there are six different categories, such as baskets or wildlife area, so there’s something for everyone.
The competition not only brightens up local communities but each year tempts new tenants to get involved, either as an entrant or judge, giving us an excellent opportunity to introduce them to other ways to participate in our work.
Despite some terrible weather this summer, our judging team of residents and staff had a hard task to pick an overall winner but in the end we plumped for Frome resident Henry Charles who carried off the Winner’s Cup.
Mr Charles, aged 79 and who still works part-time at a local supermarket’s petrol station, impressed the judges with his fine array of baskets as well as the effort he made making a communal area beautiful for everyone in his part of town.
