Tees Valley Housing is developing a mini ChinaTown in Middlesbrough.
Tees Valley Housing is developing a mini ChinaTown in Middlesbrough. About 3000 Chinese people live in the TeesValley area and older members of the community are finding isolation an increasing problem. We responded to a request from the Chinese Church to provide accommodation for Chinese Elders, many of whom do not speak English. Before going ahead, we commissioned a housing needs survey and held a number of Chinese elder focus groups. The results showed that a number of elders were isolated from the wider community. Many did not speak or read English, or live near other Chinese speaking families. Recognising the need for social inclusion, we thought it important for the sustainability of any Chinese housing scheme to provide Chinese community, retail and leisure facilities nearby. The concept of developing a ChinaTown in Middlesbrough was born. Tai Hua Court contains 20 flats with a conservatory-style common room on the top floor and a roof patio. A Chinese architect was employed to work on the design, to ensure that it met residents' cultural aspirations. The flats are now all occupied by Chinese elders. The part time warden for the scheme speaks a number of dialects and is rapidly learning more! For more information contact Billy Barnett on 01642 261100.
