Pupils from St Hugh’s School in Liverpool – some as young as eight years old - are enjoying a university challenge with a difference, thanks to Riverside Housing.

Youngsters in years three to six are taking part in additional studies and activities outside school hours as part of the Children’s University Programme.

Riverside Housing funded the project in Picton to encourage pupils to get involved in activities such as healthy eating programmes, first aid sessions, arts and crafts, gallery visits and recycling initiatives.

Divisional Director Brian Seddon said:  “The Children’s University Programme is a real motivator for pupils in the area and is welcomed by youngsters and their parents.  It helps to raise the aspirations of young people and provides more access to leisure and cultural facilities.”

Pupils study two modules per year to gain credits towards their Children’s University Diploma before graduation in their final year of primary school.

Maggie Shaw, Learning Mentor at St Hugh’s School added:  “The project benefits pupils from low-income families who may find it difficult to access activities outside school.  It also provides opportunities for pupils to shine in subjects or sports not included in the school curriculum.”
