Bringing Walkers's riverside area to life

Places for People have a vision for Walker Riverside, in the east end of Newcastle-upon-Tyne.

We have a vision for Walker Riverside, in the east end of Newcastle-upon-Tyne.  We want to improve, over the next 10 to 15 years, the local environment, housing, shops, schools, transport, education and health services.

Our aim is to make Walker a vibrant local economy and location of choice for families to live and work. We will build on the character, strong family and informal community networks that have enabled Walker to endure difficult times.

The project is part of the Bridging NewcastleGateshead initiative, and the total cost is expected to be around £475m over 15 years.  About £370m will spent on new housing.

We are proud that this regeneration project is a model of community engagement.  It is led by a Board of residents, local councillors and representatives from partner agencies.

Spending is divided between:

  • housing
  • education
  • leisure facilities
  • a new health centre
  • a new community centre
  • new transport services
  •  transformation of the area into a location of choice
  • parks and green spaces
